Title: The Cartiers Pdf The Untold Story of the Family Behind the Jewelry Empire
The captivating story of the family behind the Cartier empire and the three brothers who turned their grandfather’s humble Parisian jewelry store into a global luxury icon—as told by a great-granddaughter with exclusive access to long-lost family archives
The Cartiers is the revealing tale of a jewelry dynasty—four generations, from revolutionary France to the 1970s. At its heart are the three Cartier brothers whose motto was “Never copy, only create” and who made their family firm internationally famous in the early days of the twentieth century, thanks to their unique and complementary talents: Louis, the visionary designer who created the first men’s wristwatch to help an aviator friend tell the time without taking his hands off the controls of his flying machine; Pierre, the master dealmaker who bought the New York headquarters on Fifth Avenue for a double-stranded natural pearl necklace; and Jacques, the globe-trotting gemstone expert whose travels to India gave Cartier access to the world’s best rubies, emeralds, and sapphires, inspiring the celebrated Tutti Frutti jewelry.
Francesca Cartier Brickell, whose great-grandfather was the youngest of the brothers, has traveled the world researching her family’s history, tracking down those connected with her ancestors and discovering long-lost pieces of the puzzle along the way. Now she reveals never-before-told dramas, romances, intrigues, betrayals, and more.
The Cartiers also offers a behind-the-scenes look at the firm’s most iconic jewelry—the notoriously cursed Hope Diamond, the Romanov emeralds, the classic panther pieces—and the long line of stars from the worlds of fashion, film, and royalty who wore them, from Indian maharajas and Russian grand duchesses to Wallis Simpson, Coco Chanel, and Elizabeth Taylor.
Published in the two-hundredth anniversary year of the birth of the dynasty’s founder, Louis-François Cartier, this book is a magnificent, definitive, epic social history shown through the deeply personal lens of one legendary family.
The Family Jewels I learned a new word recently -- prosopography. It's a group biography and ever since I came across the word, I can't help notice how many of these group biographies are coming out now. I like biography in general, and one that focuses on several people is even better in some ways, allowing us to see the subjects in context rather than concentrating the attention on a single character. The Cartiers is an excellent example since it zeroes in on the family over several generations, and each generation has its stars. The book is entertaining and well researched, with plenty of background on the events going on around the Cartiers as well as insights into the jewelry business and what art, music, and current events were influencing the distinctive designs of the jewelry. There's also a hearty serving of gossip as the family members mix and match partners. I found the early years slow going and skimmed into the 20th century, when it picked up significantly around the 1920s and never slowed down."In America, where we are fond of naming Kings, Cartier would be the King of Precious Stones." And how true this is. This book, celebrating more than 175 years of Cartier family history is well written and well researched - a thorough look into one of the first families of jewelry. This history starts with the birth of Louis-Francois in 1819 and stretches through to the final sale of the company in 1975. It is filled with little tidbits of trivia and little know facts that really bring these people to life and manages to create a connection so that we can empathized with their tragedies and sacrifices and celebrate their loves and successes. While some might call it "dry" or "too long", both my husband (who is a jeweler) and myself thought is was a quick read and easily absorbed with enough "personality" to keep us turning the pages. The book concludes with a timeline, a big section of notes and a bibliography. If you are a buff of history, especially the history of jewelry and the people behind it, you might find this as intriguing as we did.Received through the 🌿Vine Program🌿 for my *honest and unbiased* review of this Advanced Reader Copy.I hope you found my opinion helpful.Comprehensive Work This factual background the Cartiers is well documented and detailed. If you want to read a 600 page history of this creative family of brothers and their ancestors and descendants, this is the book. The author (granddaughter) has written a long account. She started from the beginning of her awareness when she was looking for a bottle of wine for her grandfather and came upon a trunk which held letters describing the Cartier origin and success. Included are photos that I found the most interesting and the Cartier creativity and excellence. However, after 500 pages, it became too tedious. The editors could have deleted some extraneous details.
