"It would be hard to write a dull book on Light-Horse Harry, and Mr. Cole's is far from it.... [The book] contains passages of considerable eloquence."— WALL STREET JOURNAL book review

"Light-Horse Harry blazes across the pages of Ryan Cole's narrative like a meteor—and his final crash is as destructive. Cole tells his story with care, sympathy, and where necessary, sternness. This book is a great, and sometimes harrowing read." —Richard Brookhiser, senior editor at National Review and author of Founding Father: Rediscovering George Washington

Who was "Light-Horse Harry" Lee?

Gallant Revolutionary War hero. Quintessential Virginia cavalryman. George Washington’s trusted subordinate and immortal eulogist. Robert E. Lee’s beloved father. Founding father who shepherded the Constitution through the Virginia Ratifying Convention.

But Light-Horse Harry Lee was also a con man. A beachcomber. Imprisoned for debt. Caught up in sordid squabbles over squalid land deals. Maimed for life by an angry political mob.

Light-Horse Harry Lee’s life was tragic, glorious, and dramatic, but perhaps because of its sad, ignominious conclusion historians have rarely given him his due—until now.

Now historian Ryan Cole presents this soldier and statesman of the founding generation with all the vim and vigor that typified Lee himself. Scouring hundreds of contemporary documents and reading his way into Lee’s life, political philosophy, and character, Cole gives us the most intimate picture to date of this greatly awed but hugely talented man whose influence has reverberated from the founding of the United States to the present day.

Very good read! Fascinating, did not really know this Lee was such an important historical figure. Wish I had read it before I read about R. Lee. Strong recommendation to read it. Great patriot, bad manager of non-military affairs.Great History Lessons This is an excellent "read" because it is both an extraordinary history lesson in the aspects of our nation's "birth-ing history" but also background history in the personal lives as well as professional lives of our early heroes. In the school classroom, we never learn the "human side" of those who formed this nation. In school books, heroes are "flat figures" who somehow made things work to carve out a democracy and to set forth a Constitution of Laws that work to the present day. This book exposes both the admirable and the not so admirable sides of our colonial leaders and yet makes them sympathetic figures that one can still admire and appreciate. I only keep "really good books" in my personal library. This one is that kind of book. Really appreciated the author's research and style of writing. It was never dull.Well Done Brief History Delightful short history of Lee. His life is pretty well-covered from his Revolutionary War glory to his later life failings and downfall. A sad ending for one so gifted, but the author does not sugarcoat it. Too often biographers make excuses for their subjects, but not here. A few photos or maps would have been nice. The text describes portraits of Lee, but some photos of the paintings, Stratford Hall, and Lee's Revolutionary War contemporaries would have added to the book. A good read and on an interesting and often by-passed subject.
